Hello, my name is Luke Hoy. I am a horticulturist and landscape artist with over 8 years of horticultural experience. I am the owner of Hoy Gardens Landscape Design. Presently, I design landscapes that are a translation of my client’s essence into a garden. I primarily work with native or adapted plants, for maximum ecological benefit and resilience. I believe in the transformative power of gardens. I create beneficial, emotionally memorable, holistic spaces for humans. San Antonio is a city blessed with more green spaces than many other major cities, but our residents often struggle to create a healthy and thriving garden, due to our extreme climate. We have many opportunities in this city for dynamic gardens that serve as an inspiration and demonstration of how to garden in our climate. I am registering as a San Antonio artist as I would like to expand upon my art form (landscape) and find opportunities to combine landscape with other art forms. I love collaborating with other artists, as artists often pose the most interesting questions to one another. The possibilities are endless!

Gardens are the spiritual product of human manipulation and the natural world. They exist in both, yet never entirely in either.
I am primarily interested in gardens as a space for humans and nature to interact and feel emotions within. Much like a photographer or film maker, I frame views and carry themes throughout a space. I consider the progression of time and seasons. I often base the gardens I create on stories that I write for the space. These stories sometimes reference my clients and the garden site, but many times, they are simply a vision. Designing in this way helps me imagine the passage of time. Who lived here? What was important to them and what signs are still visible? I dream of the past, present, future and the souls that inhabit spaces.
While artistry is extremely important to me, practicality is a necessity in horticulture. One must always consider how something actually grows, or a garden will not exist for long. As an experienced horticulturist, I bring this expertise to my garden designs.
I believe gardens have the ability to heal nearly every situation. We presently live in a broken world. So many of our issues are caused by our post industrial revolution separation from nature. Through gardens, we are able to regain our critical skills, like the knowledge of how to grow our own food. Gardening helps us develop virtues, such as patience, care and hope. I believe that every person benefits from gardening or spending more time in nature.
