Omar Hilario is a Latino New Media Video Artist. He grew up in the heart of the arts focused Southtown area in San Antonio, raised in award winning after school youth arts programs Jump Start performance company and SAY Si’s Media arts and Theater programs, one of the few students to graduate under two programs. From there he traveled to Santa Fe New Mexico and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Post Production studies at Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Since then he has worked in the field of online media work, from content creation to video editing and managing post production teams for clients. As an artist Omar creates films, video poetry art and interactive fiction. He covers topics of the self: from mental health, identity, gender roles, generational trauma and masculinity. He goes on and tries to maintain the way he grew up by mentoring and being an arts instructor for the next generation of youths in art and media.

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):
My entire life has been intertwined with the arts. From an early age, I explored my creativity through multi disciplined arts programming and mentorship by active community artists. With that early background in theater, creative writing, and media arts, I jumped into the world of filmmaking. As a Latino Filmmaker I tell the untold narratives of my community, in meaningful imagery. Through my films I push the boundaries in terms of experimental video editing and abstract storytelling. In college I learned from a pioneer in interactive media and delved into the world of immersive fiction-- interactive experiences tailored for a narrative. My area of expertise is that of two worlds, one in the technical post production, and another in the creative and abstract that's been molded by experimental theater. My art has always channeled my own experiences with mental health, masculinity and identity. Through my work, I address these issues with creativity and intention.
