Patrick Joven is the single founder and artist for BioCreative Arts. He is a California-born, Texas-raised, Filipino-American currently based in San Antonio, Texas. Since Patrick was young, he always had a love for drawing but he never though there was anything he can do with it in the future; therefore, he pursued another passion: science. His educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a Concentration in Athletic Medicine and a personal training certification through NASM which he used to build years of experience working in post rehabilitation exercise for those who have spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders, and exercise prescription for personal training clients. During Patrick’s undergraduate studies, he re-found his love for drawing while also discovering the importance for art in education, after using it to help him learn and remember complex scientific concepts. Since then, Patrick has found a passion for sharing the beauty of science through his art. He is now a part-time illustrator and full-time nursing student.

Keeping his background in anatomy as the base for all of his works, artist Patrick Joven calls on his environment as inspiration for this San Antonio themed drawing. The city runs deep with history from both Mexico and Texas; therefore, it was fitting to use a well known Mexican tradition, the sugar skull face painting, as the focal point on the piece. Other well known Texas objects were put into place to to represent anatomical structures such as the cactus with spines to represent the human spine, the long horn skull to represent the sternum and clavicles (collar bones), or the blue bonnet and marigold flowers to represent the mammary glands.

“Listen to Your Body” is the artists first attempt at a self portrait and he decided to do it in his unique style of creating an amalgam of music, nature, and anatomy while also referencing his nursing occupation.

We are like a seed growing within the bodies we’ve been given while simultaneously experiencing the world around us; thus, becoming the product of both the inside and out, ultimately influencing who we truly are.

This piece is another piece with hidden easter eggs of certain objects that represent certain things. One example would be the combination of the electric keyboard and the bass drum of the drum set creating a set of headphones. Another example would be the use of Greek mythological figure, Atlas, at the base of the head to represent the atlas bone, or first cervical vertebrae, which supports the skull and allows for movements such as nodding and rotating. The last example that will be given in the description would be the use of “claves,” a percussion musical instrument, used in place of the clavicle bone.
