I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, in Alamo, a small city between McAllen and Harlingen. My dad introduced me to art at a young age, he is a self-employed artist who pinstripes and airbrushes lowriders and choppers. My dad’s dad himself was a sign painter and muralist for local businesses. The influence my family had on me and just the influence living on the frontera will have on anyone’s psyche has greatly affected my view of art and material culture. Wanting to share with others my passion for the arts and culture I decided to study it full time in college, and with the support of my family and friends I was able to be a first-gen graduate with my Bachelors in Art History.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

The way I approach my art tends to be an exploration of materiality and how material creates a conversation with the subject matter. If I want to work on a piece that deals with borders, dichotomies, separation, then I will work with materials and methods that embody that subject, mediums like metal, barbed wire, high color contrast, maybe ripping and tearing motions. The way I approach curating and writing is a bit different, it always feels a bit educational, as if trying to put the pieces together for an audience. That for me is the most significant role of a curator, to create emotional, resonating stories with visual art and material, and to make it accessible. In general, I tend to focus on themes closest and most familiar to me, the experiences of Latino and Indigenous peoples in America, particularly the American Southwest and along the frontera. Bringing these narratives and stories to a wider audience with the intent to educate and make accessible the culture. My work also heavily focuses on the study of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, with the hopes of building a post-Columbian future.
