Hebron Chism is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose work is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and a desire to better understand the world around him. His practice explores the connections between science, spirituality, history, and culture through painting, sculpture, mixed media, and installation. Rather than working within one medium, Chism allows each idea to determine the materials and processes needed to bring it to life, often transforming ordinary objects to encourage reflection.
Chism’s career began in community arts long before transitioning to a full-time studio practice. In 2001, he founded MSANI, a virtual Afrocentric arts collective fostering collaboration among diverse creators. He co-founded San Antonio’s Gevers Street Studio in 2008 and later served as Vice President of San Antonio Visual Artists. After joining the Otis Street Arts Project in Washington, D.C., Chism relocated to the Caribbean in 2017. There, he established House of Hester Studios in Barbados and Earth Clan Studios in Guyana, building vital regional creative networks.
Community engagement remains central to Chism’s practice through youth mentorship, arts programming, and organized exhibitions. His work has been widely exhibited across the United States and the Caribbean, and is held in private collections globally. Now based back in San Antonio, Texas, Chism continues to create art examining cultural transformation, identity, and memory.

Artist Statement of Work

Tell us about your work (style, approach, philosophy, subject and/or theme):

My artistic practice is rooted in experimentation. I came to art from a background of research and development, and that same curiosity continues to shape the way I work. Many people have described my work as a form of alchemy because I transform ideas into physical objects by exploring the possibilities of materials through manipulation, distillation, substitution, and combination.

I have never felt tied to a single medium. My interest in experimenting with materials allows me to move freely between painting, sculpture, mixed media, and installation. Rather than choosing materials first, I let the idea determine the medium, colors, and process. Each piece becomes an opportunity to discover what a material can do and how it can communicate an idea.

The themes in my work draw from the past, present, and future, exploring the relationships between science, magic, spirituality, human culture, and civilization. I am interested in where these worlds overlap and how they influence the way we understand ourselves and each other. My work is an ongoing process of exploration, using materials not only for what they are, but for what they have the potential to become.
