Red Dot Art Sale and Show

BSC celebrates 31 years of Red Dot with an extended opportunity to see the more than 100 artworks by San Antonio artists submitted by this year’s Honorary Artists, collected artists, and invited artists to benefit BSC’s exhibitions, art education initiatives, and artist-centric programs. The Red Dot Art Sale and Show features artworks representing a diversity of media and perspectives from new and established artists. From what was historically a one-night art sale event to now what is a three-month long show, the Red Dot Art Sale and Show is free and open to the public, Thursdays-Sundays, 10am – 6pm and includes a packed calendar of complementary public programs and events throughout this fall and winter.

This year’s honorees include the artists of The Compound, a group of homes owned by Mike Casey at Stieren and St. Mary’s Streets in the King William neighborhood. Alejandro Diaz, artist and founder of Sala Diaz, rightly calls The Compound a “social sculpture.”Over the last 30 years, artists, architects, writers, performers, musicians, and chefs — the creative people who enliven our community — have called The Compound home, including:

Joining these artists, BSC honors patrons Janet and Bruce Flohr and Arts Education Champion H-E-B. Janet and Bruce are steadfast supporters of contemporary art and artists in San Antonio. Through their Flohr Family Foundation, they have long supported nonprofit organizations, like Sala Diaz and Blue Star Contemporary, and ensured that artistic visions are realized. With her business partner Gary Nichols, Janet is the leading force behind Hare and Hound Press, an incredible resource for artists near and far.

As longtime supporters of Blue Star Contemporary — indeed, Charles Butt was the first individual donor and H-E-B was one of the first corporate supporters when BSC launched as a grassroots, artist-driven nonprofit in 1986 — H-E-B’s investment in BSC and especially in arts education programs like Family Saturday and the MOSAIC Student Artist Program have transformed the lives of generations of young artists. H-E-B’s perennial support through grants, public art commissions, and the valuable expertise of H-E-B Partners as BSC Board Members have nourished our community’s young artists as they move from our programs to college and graduate school to pursuing careers as professional artists in San Antonio, enriching all of our lives.
